birth of a book club

This little book club was born in late 2006.

Flexibility is the key! However, the basic initial guidelines for how it will work were:
  • Frequency - we'll try for every 6 weeks (monthly seemed a bit too much of an ask).
  • What we read - For a start we'll do it the traditional way - ie all read the same book and then have a discussion about it.
  • Venue - at people's homes.
  • Choosing books - each meeting someone will bring a "shortlist" of 3-5 titles and the group can decide between them as to which one will be discussed at the following meeting. We'll stick to paperbacks to keep costs down if people are buying.
  • You won't be blackballed from coming to a meeting if you haven't read the book. That's just harsh.
  • Discussion - we'll begin with each person rating the book and explaining what they liked/didn't like. If that doesn't prompt enough discussion, we can use discussion questions that seem to be available on the net for lots of books, or just descend into unrelated ramblings....
  • Ratings - out of 17. Why? Becuase 17's cool. It's a prime number.
