book fifteen: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

3pm, Sunday 19 April 2009 at Tim & Wendy's place.

Our next book is the winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon. Set in New York City in 1939, the novel follows the lives of 2 cousins, Joe Kavalier and Sam Clay from the heady heights of the American Dream to grim WWII. This book was overwhelmingly voted for as the next book due to a number of factors including the promise of a short (2-3 hours maximum) opening presentation from James regarding the "Golden Age" of comics. Sadly, James' presentation has been deferred until a later date.

Ellie brought the shortlist.

Ratings (out of 17):
Leigha: 11 "the ending really annoyed me"
Steve: 11 - "good but not great" (but 17 for the cover)
Ellie: 11 "not a must-read"
Wendy: 14 "really well written, well researched, liked the almost epic nature of it"
Tim: 15 "enjoying it so far, but only two thirds of the way through..."
James (postal vote): 14 "I think same comments and feeling as Wendy. I am supremely impressed by the writing and research and somewhat epic feel of it - though it doesnt necessarily always flow well, and i dont think it captured the emotion of the time as well as others i have read."

Average: 12.7
