book thirty-nine: The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love

9 September 2012 - We met at Tim and Wendy's place to talk about this book by  Oscar Hijuelos. We met at Tim and Wendy's place.  This book is from Mari's shortlist, chosen as an example of the "ticking clock" literary technique.

 Ratings (out of 17):

Jim. 9  about a pass. Meh.

Mari  Eh. Non engaging and I didn't care about the characters. No intrigue. I could see that Nestor was oing to die and that Cesar would become old and jowly. 8

Leigha 9 just over half way. I finished so it must have been ok but found it hard going especially without a book mark!  Hard to follow. Jumping back and forth between characters and times. Not that interested in his pinga

Nicole - movie has an 11. Because of the music and the fashion it was a good movie to watch.

Wendy 10. I was interested in the music and the history and the food and new York. A bit disjointed and I didn't like the characters too much, hard to relate to. Appreciate the ticking clock writing technique now - wish I'd had that in back of mind at time of reading.

Tim 11. No comments. It was ok. Nice costumes.
