20 January 2012 (close enough to the bookclub's fifth birthday!). This book by Gillian Flynn had us all thinking. It was from Jim's shortlist and we met at Leigha and Steve's place.
Scores:
SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS BOOK!! We will ruin the ending for you in this entry.
Steve - 15 - thought it was good, maybe a little long. I actually felt sorry for her when she was robbed!
Mari - 16 - I was pleased that I picked that the voice of Amy was fake and that she sounded much more real when her real voice came in. Liked the "cool girl" discussion and how everyone is ultimately pretending to be the "cool person". And how the "cool person" persona is different depending on who you were with.
Also felt it was very chilling about how the lying has happened through out her life. Can't quite give it 17 but close.
Jim - and how Amy can mess with someone who has crossed her to the extent that they end up being so seriously disturbed that they are unreliable.
Leigha - would give it 16 but the last 1/3 lost me. But still thought it was excellent so 15.
Roshni - 15. Really hard to put down but some parts irritated me. Think she captured well how relationships break down in early part of it. Eg. 3rd anniversary.
Nicole - will give it 16. I really enjoyed it. Good smart interesting crime fiction. Very readable. Really felt my loyalties shifting constantly throughout the book.
Much discussion about how we could break Amy's story!
Tim - 16 - it was good.
Wendy -17 - it has had me thinking all morning about the book. It was all cleverly done. I think she did the characters really well and did the emotional side of things well but also the crime / mystery side of things. Agree with Nicole that it was clever in so many ways.
Jim - 15 - what Tim said. all characters really well realised.
Maree - 16 as well. Would have been 17 except for Desi's murder. Couldn't put it down but was disappointed with them end!
...but what actors will they cast for the movie???
