The Big Sleep (1939) was Raymond Chandler's debut novel, introducing hard-boiled private detective Philip Marlowe in a plot so famously tangled that not even Chandler could account for every thread — legend has it that when the 1946 film adaptation's screenwriters asked who killed the chauffeur, Chandler admitted he didn't know either.
