book eighteen: A Confederacy of Dunces

Sunday 13 September 2009

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1981. It was published some years after the author's suicide, and according to a review Leigha read, it is a must-read. However, according to us, you could probably just give it a miss.

Thanks to Leigha and Steve for offering to hosting us and providing cupcakes! Maree brought the shortlist.

Ratings (out of 17):
Steve: 10 Took 3 months to get through - enough said. Steve enjoyed the description of Ignatius J Reilly well and the development of the character. Steve enjoyed the accents of the various characters but found the storyline very average - the subplot involving Miss Trixie and Mrs Levy was a waste of time.
Maree: 8 Reinforced her theory that she doesn't like modern American literature; she fell asleep reading it.
Ellie: 6 The only marks are for the descriptions. Ellie took forever to get through the book and didn't like the characters or the story. She wouldn't recommend the book to anyone else and she would not read it again.
Leigha: 9 The book was well written but nut Leigha's cup of tea; large parts of the plot were pointless.
Tim: 7 Didn't complete the book. Well written, but story not engaging.
Wendy: 9 Didn't complete - will finish reading but it's a struggle.
Emma (postal vote): 13 Found the characters strangely appealing in a slobby way.

Average: 8.9
