book twentyseven: Anna Karenina

Sunday 13 February 2011 (deferred from 16 January).

And so here we are. Our first Russian. All 806 pages of her (plus notes). Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."

Thanks Maree for hosting us! Tim brought the shortlist.

Ratings (out of 17):
Ellie: 6 couldn't finish, didn't like the characters.
Wendy: 9 felt it had a slow start, but pace has picked up in the middle. Will definately finish reading it.
Leigha: 8 expected to be more enchanted (as with English 'classics' like Jane Austin) but instead it was just hard work.
Maree: 10 got sick of all the philosophy. Interested in some characters, but could have been a lot shorter.
Emma: 11 felt like she had a clunky translation and that it needed a good edit.
Mari: 11 found it interesting if you skipped all the ruminations.
Jim: 9 (based on the 100 pages he read) will probably finish reading it.
Tim: 4 (based on the 150 pages he read) definitely will not read any further and would take The Road any day over this stuff.
Average: 8.5
