book thirty-six: Lolita

Sunday 22 April 2012

Our next book was the ever-controversial Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.

We met at Nicole's place.

Leigha submitted a shortlist by postal vote.

As expected, the book prompted plenty of discussion.  "Beautifully written", "stomach turning" and "monstrous".  But overall the ratings were high, despite the each of us being horrified and entertained all within the same page.

Those of us who haven't finished it will now go away and finish reading it.  We are all intrigued by how it was all presented and justified in HH's mind.  It was disturbing but not in a horror sense.  The story initially makes you empathise with HH until he really goes "off the rails".  It is all written to explain how he is not to be despised but to be understood by all the journalists and psychiatrists who read his story in the future.

Ratings (out of 17):

Jim - 17
Mari - 17
Maree - based on the 17s, Maree will now finish it!
Tim - 14 (provisional, pending finishing the book)
Wendy - 13 (provisional also - enjoying the writing style but can't get over the content)
Nicole - will now finish the book, no score as yet.

(btw this was Wendy's work)
